Spike Art Magazine Publishes Look, Linger, and Touch Something, a Conversation with Joel Sanders and Diana Fuss

Joel Sanders and Diana Fuss, Professor of English at Princeton University, revisited their 2011 essay “An Aesthetic Headache: Notes from the Museum Bench in a conversation published by Spike Art Magazine as part of their Spring 2023 issue. In the piece, titled Look, Linger, and Touch Something, Sanders and Fuss discuss the ways in which their thinking about embodied museum spectatorship has evolved over the past decade, as well as the work MIXmuseum has accomplished to address the issues raised by their seminal text. Joel Sanders Receives FIT’s Lawrence Israel Prize

The Fashion Institute of Technology has awarded Joel Sanders the 2023 Lawrence Israel Prize, given annually to an individual or firm whose work enriches FIT Interior Design students’ course of study. As prize winner, Joel will deliver a lecture at the school on Thursday, September 28th at 6:00 PM, titled Inclusive Design: Equity, Access + Wellness, on the importance of inclusivity in his work. Multisensory Wayfinding in “The Pandemic Effect, Ninety Experts on Immunizing the Built Environment,” edited by Blaine Erickson Brownell

MIXdesign team members Joel Sanders, Hansel Bauman, Magda Mostafa, and Eron Friedlaender co-authored a piece on Multisensory Wayfinding in the recently published volume The Pandemic Effect. Multisensory Wayfinding consists of a set of inclusive design principles that augments conventional signage and uses color, materials, lighting and acoustics to minimize environmental stressors and increase spatial awareness for everyone. The book compiles contributions from ninety subject-area experts to address the implications of the COVID pandemic on the design of the built environment. It is available for purchase HERE.

From Stud to Stalled!: Social Equity and Public Restrooms in “Intimacy Exposed: Toilet, Bathroom, Restroom,” edited by Javier Fernández Contreras and Roberto Zancan

Joel Sanders contributed a chapter to this edited volume that tracks the evolution of his thinking over the past decades since the publication of Stud: Architectures of Masculinity in 1996. The book compiles essays that began as lectures given during the 2018 symposium Intimacy Exposed: Toilet, Bathroom, Restroom (organized by the Department of Interior Architecture at HEAD – Genève).
