In the Millennium Residence, a gut-renovation of a 2,000 square foot apartment, the domestic programs (entry, living/dining, dance practice, study, master bedroom, and master bath) form a chain of overlapping spaces that flow around the centerpiece of the project – a service core incorporating plumbing (master and guest bath) and storage (master closet, home entertainment, bookshelves, and appliances).
Unlike the typical core, usually treated as a solid, opaque mass that shields its contents from view, our design selectively reveals. The core, made of acid-etched glass, is also the apartment’s principal light source, or lantern. Backlit bodies and household objects are silhouetted against this glowing container.
