Schools + Universities
We design projects for schools and universities across a range of scales—from renovations to new construction—and program types, including restrooms, libraries, lounges, classrooms, recreation facilities, and residential colleges to create inclusive environments that foster community building across living, learning, and socializing.
Our approach is guided by three interrelated strategies: designing socially and physically accessible environments that support diverse users; creating multipurpose spaces that integrate analog and digital media; and weaving new and existing buildings into the campus fabric to strengthen connectivity and collective life.
Accessibility Beyond Compliance
All of our work is informed by our inclusive design expertise and is dedicated to creating accessible, welcoming environments that respond to the intersecting needs of diverse students, faculty, and staff. In addition to acting as designers, we serve as inclusive design consultants—conducting site assessments, developing transition plans, and authoring campus guidelines that extend accessibility beyond code compliance.
Multisensory Wayfinding
Drawing from our research on the overlapping needs of people with mobility, sensory, and cognitive differences, our education projects are informed by Multisensory Wayfinding—a set of design principles that foster spatial awareness and reduce environmental stressors such as disorientation and overstimulation. These strategies augment conventional signage through the coordinated use of color, materials, lighting, acoustics, and environmental graphics, enabling all users to navigate public space safely, intuitively, and independently.
Digital Media: Integrating Technologies into Multipurpose Spaces
Our education projects leverage the spatial and sensory potential of digital devices—smartphones, tablets, and computers—that conjoin vision and hearing across physical and virtual space. We integrate analog and digital information systems, including assistive technologies, into flexible interior and exterior environments that support a range of media-rich activities. These multipurpose spaces enable students and faculty—individually and collectively—to move fluidly between research, writing, collaboration, and social interaction, often within the same setting.
Campus Context: Marrying Old + New
We design both renovation and new construction projects that are formally and programmatically integrated within their campus contexts while expressing a contemporary architectural language. Our process begins with a close analysis of existing conditions to identify assets and deficiencies in spatial organization and technical performance. We then introduce design interventions that complement and distinguish themselves from the existing fabric—drawing on the scale, massing, and materiality of surrounding buildings to create projects that stitch seamlessly into the campus while signaling an institutional commitment to contemporary values.
Recognition
Our education projects have received numerous awards, including six New York Chapter AIA Design Awards, three New York State AIA Design Awards, four Interior Design Best of Year Awards, and two ALA / IIDA Library Interior Design Awards. We have presented our university projects at conferences such as the Society for Campus and University Planning and have been featured in The New York Times, Architectural Record, and Interior Design Magazine.
