JSA/MIXdesign designed a medical clinic for The Men’s Health Foundation that provides sexual health services to LGBTQ+ youth of color in South-Central Los Angeles. Our design addresses the stigma associated with receiving medical care as an LGBTQ+ person in this community by embedding the clinic in a vibrant community center. With funding from the National Institute of Health, the Men’s Health Foundation acquired two adjacent derelict structures in a prominent location at the intersection of South Broadway and Manchester Avenue.
This site offers convenient access for visitors arriving by car from the nearby 110 Freeway as well as for those using public transportation, with several bus lines serving this intersection. Each of the refurbished buildings houses one of two programs: the former Art Deco bank building now houses the Club, and the former school now houses the Clinic. The Wet Core, containing bathrooms and locker rooms serves as a hinge uniting the Club and Clinic.
The building is divided into three components:
• The Club, accessed via the building’s main entrance on S. Broadway, consists of a café/lounge, vocational services space, and multi-purpose space that hosts a variety of classes and events.
• The Clinic, accessed from the side entrance on West Manchester Avenue, consists of a reception area, exam rooms, and labs.
• The Wet Core contains amenities, a bathroom and changing rooms that serve both the Club and Clinic.
