Whitney Museum Accessibility Assets Guidelines
Whitney Museum Accessibility Assets Guidelines
The Whitney Museum of American Art asked JSA/MIX to draft museum-wide
guidelines to increase accessibility for all visitors, both through digital interfaces and throughout the museum. The outcome is an illustrated
100+ page report consisting of technical, spatial, and policy recommendations
with three clear goals: make a smartphone app for accessibility assets easier to use, raise awareness of accessibility assets across digital, analog, and human
channels, and develop non-app alternatives within the museum’s physical
environment. The result: a more intuitive, inclusive, and multimodal visitor
experience for the Whitney’s diverse audience.
Scope of Work
Over six months, our team combined research, spatial analysis, and community engagement, conducting two workshops with the Whitney Accessibility Advisory Committee—bringing together experts, staff, and community members who are d/Deaf, hard of hearing, low vision, neurodivergent, or mobility-aid users—who provided essential feedback. Through an iterative process, we assessed assets through guided tours and group discussions, generating insights that shaped the recommendations included in the final report.
